Motto: ‘VitamPraesta Puram’. ‘Grant us a pure life; a life without reproach’
On February 1, 1954, Bishop Anthony Konings, third Catholic Bishop of the then Keta diocese, established Queen of Apostles Secondary School, now OLA, in Keta, with a student population of 35. The current student population is approximately 1,525.
Knowing the importance of holistic Catholic education for girls, Bishop Konings invited the Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles to administer the school, with Rev. Sister Theodorus Fahy, as the first Headmistress. Other original teachers included Rev. Sr. Dolores Davies and Rev. Fr Herman Lubbers.
Queen of Apostles Secondary School (OLA) was started with borrowed facilities from the convent boarding school for girls and the nearby middle school building in Keta which were converted into classrooms, a dining hall, and a dormitory block.
In January 1956, funding from the Dutch government complemented by the Diocese resulted in the expansion of OLA under the supervision of Rev. Brother and Architect Van Gastel. With the move to Ho, Catholic girls from the Volta Region, who hitherto traveled to places like Cape Coast to receive Catholic education found a home.
In 1958, the first batch of 15 students took their School Certificate Examinations with flying colors and helped solidify OLA’s reputation as an excellent academic institution for holistic girls’ education.
By the 1960s, as a result of the increased student population, double stream enrolment and the first sixth form for liberal arts education were introduced. The science sixth form was introduced in 1975.
In 1976, Rev. Sr.Theodorus retired after 22 meritorious years. That same year, Bishop Konings left Ghana and handed over the Diocese to Most Rev. Francis A. K. Lodonu.
Sr. Theodorus is fondly remembered for her strict, uncompromising discipline and dedication to OLA. She was replaced by Sister Marie O’Driscoll of blessed memory. Subsequent headmistresses include Rev. Sr. Regina Kampo, the first African and Ghanaian headmistress, Rev. Sr. Bernadette Kofitse, Mrs. Philomena Afeti, and the current headmistress, Madam Regina Coffie all past students.
